Borne of the Deep by Michael Patrick Hicks
I received a free audio copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. This in no way impacts my opinion.
Salem Hawley returns as the emancipated slave who dares take on the Lovecraft canon. This time Salem travels to Arkham to retrieve a tome, Al Azif, before it falls into the wrong hands. When Salem arrives at the famous university, he finds things are worse than he could have imagined. The locals are being turned into half-fish like creatures, straight out of Dunwich, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. This time he has some help though, as a witch (maybe) from a mysterious society shows up,
The characters are good, whether it’s Salem, his new friend, or the doctor Salem travels with who sees our hero more as a manservant than a companion. The buildup to the finale moves along swiftly, with some hints at what we can expect later in the series, with not one, but two secret societies. The final battle is quote rousing, with temporary heroes rising up to help save the day.
Verdict
A fun take on the Lovecraft mythos.
