Top Five Audiobooks of 2018 (so far)
Seems to have taken a bit longer to get this one out, although in my defence I have been working some more on my own short stories (yay!). Anyways, audiobooks are a funny thing. You could listen to the finest story ever written, and if the narrator sucks, you probably won’t bother listening to the end. When they’re good though, it adds a whole new level to the story.
I listen to a fair amount of audios, usually when I’m out walking, doing stuff around the house, or first thing in the morning as I check e-mails and so forth. This little lot are all full length (or almost), well narrated and fun (in one form or another). Here goes:
- Paternus, by Dyrk Ashton: A rollicking, erudite urban fantasy that plays an interesting twist on mythology. The narrator needs to learn how to pronounce Irish names, but otherwise he’s awesome (link)
- Pagan Night, by Tim Akers: Not the most original of ideas, but a cracking tale nonetheless, given extra life by it’s narrator, who handles a whole plethora of characters well (link)
- Oathbreaker, by Aaron Hodges: Possibly the best narrator of the bunch, Oathbreaker is an epic fantasy with some interesting characters on both sides of the battlefield (link)
- An American Weredeer in Michigan, by CT Phipps: More urban fantasy. This is a sequel to I Was a Teenage Weredeer, but well worth a listen. It’s chock full of pop culture references, and the narrator breathes life into sassy and sarcastic heroine Jane Doe (link)
- A Hill on Which to Die, by Joe Vasicek: The shortest, but not the least of our quintet, this is a clever take with a bunch of orcs playing against type and refusing to sign on with the rising Dark Lord. The narrator’s gruff tones could well lead you to believe that you’re listing to actual orcs (link).
There ya go, five audiobooks worthy of lending an ear to. Next post I’ll probably talk about some of my favourite self-published authors. Or maybe something else. Maybe I’ll blather on about my own work, get you all pumped up for my next release – whenever that will be. I’ll have news of some kind for you, regardless.
Rock on
Al

Paternus is a great story and obviously I’m partial to AN AMERICAN WEREDEER IN MICHIGAN.
